Interview with Jared Moody: Orgonite Artisan

by Chelsea Morning
This month, Chelsea interviews Jared Moody, an artist who works with organic materials as well as energetic materials to make one of a kind wearable Orgonite pendants and tools for healing ourselves on an energetic level.
Orgone Energy- in India it’s known as Prana Energy, in China, it’s called Chi Energy, I guess here, we call it soul, or spirit. What do you call it, and how would you describe it?
I would describe it as energetic motion, if you look at water, a pond or stream, you’ll find the most life where the water moves, and more stagnation and decay where the water does not move. Think of life energy in the same way. What provides energetic motion, in short, equals more prana, chi, orgon- more life. For us, this means more life energy to work with.

You create orgonite pendants, massage tools, pyramids, etc. Orgonite is fueled by the energy that is put into them and I’m always impressed by how knowledgeable and mindful you are of what you choose to use in your generators. Can you explain what organic and inorganic materials you generally use? Could you also explain the reason those materials need to be layered?
The idea behind the layering was the discovery of Dr. Wilhelm Reich, a VERY interesting man, and is a large topic, but in simple terms Dr. Reich discovered “life energy” is emitted from organic materials- living, carbon based materials. He was able to document this. He called this energy “orgone”. Any organic material emits energy and inorganic materials, such as metals, have the ability to reflect (and impart) energies. Other inorganic materials, like crystals, can break apart light (why i use tiny, but whole crystals, in orgonite), which is a way to transform energy back into its pure elemental state, “cleansed”. The reason behind the layering is to take advantage of these properties, and how they reflect/emit/reflect energy. If you layer metal/straw/metal/straw/metal you WILL create an amplifying energetic device, HOWEVER the device will only amplify the current energy fields- if it's bad energy (wi-fi router, cell tower), it will be BAD energy amplified. To correct this, crystals are used in orgonite today. The natural properties of quartz and the crystals' ability to break apart light can transform any energetic field into one that is life supporting. More research needs to be done with orgonite and radioactivity, cancers, etc.
One more thing about materials and creating- the ancients spoke about purity and following strict guidelines in the creation of anything esoteric, or magical, like orgonite. This is one reason I use the Papaver Somniferum flower petals, pods and seeds as part of the “organic” aspect to my orgonite. I grow, harvest, collect, and dry my own poppies to ensure their quality. There is real healing in the poppy.
Computer companies today spend millions on the best crystals, only to break down and use just tiny pieces to power supercomputers. Imagine if one could use the crystal in its natural state- Orgonite is a start to this technology.

Waterfalls, mountaintops, green forests are charged with positive orgone, and that energy has such a positive, joyful, rejuvenating, and powerful feeling! Scientifically, spiritually, and physically speaking, what are some of the many benefits of your orgonite pendants?
There are many benefits to orgonite, and crystals in general, but these benefits take time. A decrease in anxiety, it becomes easier to sleep and rest, these are usually the first things noticed. The pendant also acts as a thought interrupter, which is very helpful with addictions and habits we wish to stop.
It is like an extra protection to the mind and heart when the pendant is put on- the more one visualizes and sees this, the more it works. The reason I follow strict methods, lunar timing, salt cleansing, singing bowls and frequencies like 528hz, is that all this is incorporated into creating the very best I can, as well as a
dding new information and technologies like solar energy. My new Fire Talisman series has built in 3.5 volt mini solar panels. “Powered Orgonite”.
Today's way of living makes talking energy and healing more challenging, even when you can prove yourself right.

Studies have shown there is a faint blue aura around healthy blood cells in our body, which is believed to be orgone energy, but that cancer cells have a grey aura, possibly due to energy stagnation. What other negative effects does unbalanced orgone energy have not only on our bodies but also our environment?
In the human body this unbalanced energy can manifest as anger, confusion or being hostile and defensive to other living things. Internally, it can cause ulcers, skin disorders and cancers or mentally causing addictions and cravings.
In the environment, this unbalanced energy will manifest as deserts, thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes.

Tell us a little about cloudbusting?!
Cloudbusting, in general, is a way to mitigate and clean up the environment from the unbalanced energies you see all around you- cleaning up chemtrails are an example. To talk further on this requires one to be aware of HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program), controlled weather and orgonite. In short, the weather we see around us is MAN's. Mother
Nature has mostly been subdued (why she, Nature, is so angry). Where you have these large energetic devices, like cell towers, you have a large release of negative energy into the environment. Creating devices following the work of Dr. Reich, Don Croft and Georg Ritschl, cloudbusting/towerbusting, we can bring balance to the environment. As balance is brought, the ideas to harm will fade and life is improved. It is a selfless idea- you gift the devices to the areas they are needed. Although more and more people are understanding what this is, people like Georg Ritschl have gifted entire areas of Africa and brought life back to the area. Think of the pendants, but the size of a 2-gallon bucket and placed out in nature.

Are there any books or media that you would recommend concerning orgone energy for someone interested in learning more?

Interview with Charity Rae: Spirit Animal Retriever

By Chelsea Morning

Discover how Charity began working with spirit animals, how you can call on spirit animals, and what she would nickname the moon.

Journeying is a practice utilized by shamans for over 100,000 years. Considered the doctors and therapists of their community, shamans would ‘‘journey’ to ask for and receive spiritual information and guidance to be used to help heal those in the tribe. Women were the first shamans, with cave paintings and talismans depicting them as sacred protectors and healers.

Charity is an ancient cave-dwelling soul, a profound intuitive, a deep listener of spirits, a gentle gatherer of spiritual lore, wisdom, and tidings. In harmony and balance with nature, she is able to journey beyond the moss and mushrooms, above the hollowed flying bones of crow, below the grass warmed by sleeping tiger, beyond the cave of bear, she travels, speaking in the language of nature and spirits. Invited in to the hidden realms, she is welcomed and dances an intimate dance, watching, listening, feeling with the inner essence of her eyes, ears, and intuition. Receiving the flowers, the bones, and the roots from the spirits, she brings back healing, messages, and guidance in bundles, presenting it to us as a divine offering, honoring both the tribe and the spirits.

Charity specializes in recognizing, identifying, and retrieving one’s personal power animals, as well as speaking with and relaying messages from beloved pets that have entered the spirit realm, plus creating spirit boxes to honor and enjoy our sacred creatures.

Tell us the story about how you first became involved in working with power/ spirit animals?Although I didn’t call it a Spirit Animal at the time ( I did not know about Spirit Animals then), Crow came to me when I was around 8 years old and became my helper and guide. I learned later in life that other women in my family have had birds (particularly birds that are black in color) talk to them or come to them with messages. Crow showed me the magic that dwelled all around me and within me and taught me how to navigate between the veils and dimensions. I still work with Crow to this day, as well as other animals that have become guides.

You offer power animal retrievals, in which you will journey to the spirit world to discover a person’s power/spirit animal or animals if there are more than one! What do people receive from one of your readings?

It really depends. I never know what I will discover when I go on a journey. I will go on behalf of someone looking for their power animal and ask the animal to come forward and reveal itself. It is often a very beautiful and surprising experience full of messages and metaphor. I feel so honored and lucky to get to go on such wondrous adventures. Sometimes one animal presents itself, sometimes two, sometimes many. Sometimes animals have very specific messages to relay. Once I have met the power animal(s) I will translate the information and wisdom I was given to the best of my ability and write the story of the journey to share via email.

If you are interested in getting a power animal reading or have questions about it, feel free to email me at SpiritAnimalStories@gmail.com
Once a person has a power animal, how and when can they call on them for guidance?
Call on them anytime! Power Animals are reliable spirit helpers. They have come to your side to protect and guide you. They want to assist you through challenges you may face, whether those are internal or external challenges. And they are also there to celebrate life with you. Your power animal is your helper, but also a sacred aspect of your very soul, so identifying and strengthening the bond between you and your animal guide is important work indeed. As with any relationship, it is essential to nourish and foster the connection between you and your spirit companion. Without effort put forth, the relationship will not be as strong and vital.
How do you build a relationship with your animal(s)?
  • Have gratitude; thank your animal(s) for the help and wisdom they give.
  • Enjoy their company and listen to what they are trying to share; visit with them through your thoughts or meditations or even in real life. You can observe and study your animal(s) here on this plane and learn more about them.
  • You can make a shrine or altar for them or wear things that remind you of them.
  • You can create art about them.
  • There are so many ways to honor your power animal(s). Do what feels right to you.
You also offer the service of journeys into the spirit world to communicate with dearly loved pets who have left this realm and have entered the spirit realm, with many relaying clear and meaningful messages that resonate with their humans. How does this work, do you need to go in with a specific question in mind, or do you journey to them and simply let them speak to you?
I usually will journey to meet a pet and hang out with them and see what they have to share. I typically do not ask specific questions, but rather let the spirit of the pet convey what seems important to them. I have found that things they are really adamant about sharing is usually the stuff that resonates with their human friend. It is newer work to me, communicating with pets that have passed, but it is proving to be very sweet and beautiful. It often seems not only healing for the human who misses their beloved friend but also healing for the animal too.

Being the artistic and connected soul that you are, you also make spirit animal boxes. They’re a wonderful way to honor Spirit Animals or any animals that you love, plus are a meaningful way to hold special keepsakes and memories, magical treasures, jewelry or affirmations. We carry them at the shop, but you also have an etsy shop! Wanna plug your etsy shop a little?!
The name of the new Etsy shop is Wandering Woodland Co and you can look at it here www.etsy/shop/wanderingwoodlandco
The idea of the Etsy shop is to have a collective of creative friends contributing makings within a woodland/ nature theme. So far just my spirit animal boxes (wooden boxes featuring different animals) are for sale, but I am pretty sure there will be more items soon. I have a friend who wants to make beaded animal earrings for the shop and another friend who makes beautiful, nature-inspired metal jewelry. My sister, who I have been closely collaborating with on opening the shop, has been researching and compiling gemstones that go with different power animals. She also makes lovely wands and mobiles from sticks and feathers, gems and moss.

10 little questions (because it’s the little things that mean so much)

Mossy, mysterious Earth

What nickname would you give to the moon?
Everything lovely in my life right now is called ‘good’; good home, good bed, good food…..good moon.

Frankincense
What gemstone do you love?

Interview with Dragonfly Lake Scents by Chelsea Morning

Read about the benefits of Beer Soap, the local ingredients they use, and what soap would be called if it wasn’t called soap!
Tenise and Mioshee, the owners, operators, and imaginative genius behind Dragonfly Lake Scents are artists in every sense of the word. Using the perfect blend of science and art, history and contemporary, every soap is a piece of art. Blending wisps of complementary, eye-catching, mouthwatering colors, along with precise heating and cooling of temperatures, ancestral-rooted knowledge and the use of local ingredients, Dragonfly Lake Scents create tangible poetry, incorporating nearly all of the senses. Fun-loving, spirited, caring, and knowledgeable, these beautiful ladies, these composers of scents, sculptors of beauty, and painters of suds, put science, art, love and light into each piece. Every time I drive by the PACA building, with its history deep-seated into its architecture, I imagine Tenise and Mioshee up there with all the other artisans, musicians, actors, and poets, creating masterpieces to delight, inspire and beautify the world.

Tenise, you’ve said that you learned to make soap from your great-grandmother on her farm in Mississippi! Learning these passed down skills from our ancestors, I think, is becoming a rarity. How has learning soap-making from her influenced how you make your products?
My great-grandmother came from a completely self-reliant background. She ran a farm with my great-grandfather, helped build and was active in her church, worked as a truck stop cook, raised their children and also was a foster mom. She was also the local medicine woman/midwife. She was no-nonsense and direct, and her only alone time was when she worked in her herb garden. She allowed me to work with her there, which is where my herb knowledge comes from. Her soaps were basic and functional because she didn’t have time for anything else. I know that success requires hard work, but I also make soaps that are indulgent and luxurious. I want our customers to have that moment of peace and relaxation that she was never able to have.

Mioshee, you have a background in nursing, and are such a nurturing, caring individual! How does this come into play when making your soaps, or coming up with a new recipe or idea?
I’ve always been interested in dermatology and helping people, especially those with skin issues. I don’t think enough emphasis is put on keeping our largest organ (your skin!) healthy and beautiful!

Dragonfly Lake Scents is a beautiful name for a business! Is there a meaning or story behind why you chose that name for your business?
Well, I knew I wanted to offer tribute to our own beautiful lake and dragonflies hang out around lakes and swamps…..and New Orleans is FULL of swamps (just ask Tenise!!)

You’re both true believers in supporting the community and shopping local! Are a lot of the ingredients you put into your recipes sourced locally?
Our policy is to get all the products we use locally, if possible. Quite a bit of our raw materials come from our community; our beer soap is made with Voodoo Brewery beer! We get the goats milk for our goats milk soap from a small hobby farm in Waterford! Some of the teas and herbs in our soap are bought at the Whole Foods Co-op or at Chicory Hill!

All your soaps, like the Black Raspberry Vanilla soap for example, look good enough to eat. Where do you get the inspiration for the different soaps and products you make?
In the old days, soap was just to clean. It was very utilitarian! I wanted to create a product that not only keeps your skin and your family clean, but also looks like a mini work of art. One of our most important senses is our eyesight and if you are drawn to our soap by seeing how beautiful it is; then you are more likely to take a whiff and see the ingredients! I am often inspired by nature and the beauty that surrounds us everyday.

You make Beer Soap, which is a unique product all on its own, but it turns out beer soap is actually really good for your skin and hair! What are some of the benefits?
Well, the natural sugars in beer create fluffy, Hollywood-style bubbles. The yeast can help with acne and work as a mild exfoliant. Lastly, hops (the main ingredient in beer) is said to have skin soothing properties!

With so many lovely products; Sereni(tea) Bath Bombs, Bergamot and Lime Deodorant, Bamboo Hemp Soap, Pumpkin Spice Lip Balm, do both of you have your own favorites?
My favorite is the Lavender + Goats Milk!

10 little questions (because it’s the little things that mean so much)

What’s your favorite sound?
The coffee pot brewing!

What smell do you love?
That fresh clean smell after a rainstorm!

Pineapple on pizza?

Ewwww!

Do you have any nicknames?
Soap Lady #1 aka Sudsy

If soap wasn’t called soap, what would it be called?
People cleaner!!

Would you rather be a tree or live in a tree for the rest of your life?

Live in a tree!

What’s your favorite herb?

Basil! I love homemade pesto!

What’s your favorite essential oil?

Ylang ylang; it’s such a clean, earthy scent!

What gemstone do you love?

Rose quartz and blue topaz

Interview with Tim Burlingame

Interview with Tim Burlingame
By Chelsea Morning

Find out about Hoodoo folklore, rare mojo bags he’s made, and if he would get on a Wheel of Death

Authentic as the stones, roots, and bones of the earth, Tim Burlingame, brings with him a presence of kindness, realness, and a genuine warmth. Surrounding himself in an environment of plants, elements, animals and lore, he is a curios, a talisman, a walking, talking, breathing charm of good luck, protection, and prosperity. Self-taught, knowledgeable, and skilled in the practice of rootwork, he’s a maker, not just of Mojo Bags, but of customs and traditions, carrying on the stories and magic of the our past, and distant lands, connecting us to an array of spirits and the elements of our earth. I was so curious during this interview, that I was on the edge of my seat, waiting for the answers to all of my questions, and Tim, a true folklorist, doesn’t disappoint.

When and how did you start getting interested in herbs and their magical properties?
It's all pretty mundane, actually. Probably ten or eleven years ago, I had seen several movies and television shows with plots involving Hoodoo, and was curious about what it was and the authenticity of its presentation. So through the internet and library, I gained a basic understanding of Hoodoo and its principles. For fun I started making mojo bags for my friends. Eventually I started stocking up on Hoodoo and African American folklore books, learning as much as I could. Hurston, Hyatt, and Yronwode were my main sources, but my library is becoming fairly extensive. I've actually become a bit of an amateur folklorist, with a primary focus on African American and slave culture.

Your mojo bags are based in Hoodoo folk magic, can you tell us about the cultural influences and the basic spiritual beliefs of Hoodoo?
Hoodoo has a long history of assimilation. It is an eclectic blend of the beliefs of many cultures, all adapted for use by common people with little money or property, to exercise control over their lives.
The basic concepts of Hoodoo are that there are spirits that can either help or hurt us, depending on the will of the practitioner, and that certain objects have magical attributes that can be used to these ends. There is no strict morality enforced in Hoodoo, but most practitioners tend to be moral people, only working to better the lives of themselves, friends, and family.
Africans brought their religions of ancestor worship and root magic to America on slave ships. To hide these beliefs from their masters, who disapproved of and punished their practice, they integrated Catholic ritual and Mexican Santeria into their own magical system. Many of their traditional roots had to be replaced with those of the native plants, and the use of bones, minerals, and animal curios were adopted from Native American Animism. European green magic, Hebrew Kabbalah, and Pennsylvania Dutch Pow-wow magic were later integrated into Hoodoo tradition through various grimoires and pamphlets from mystics, travelling salesmen, and mail-order catalogs.

The Mojo Bags we carry at Chicory Hill Herbs are: Money Drawing, Keep-Away, Love, Protection, Favor & Success, and Good Fortune. Would these be considered to be authentic vegetable and mineral Hoodoo curios? Can you explain what vegetable and mineral curios are and how they are effective in helping to attain success or improve the lives of those who carry them?
They are authentic, made in the Hoodoo tradition. Everything I use in my mojos can be found in a book, article, or essay from reliable sources. I take pride in this, as you will often find sellers online who blend Hoodoo with Voodoo or Wicca, or even make things up completely, and claim authenticity.
What we call curios are simply objects that are believed to hold their own inherent power to magically help or harm. They can be roots, herbs, minerals, seeds, et cetera. Their powers or affinities can be based on folktales, behavior or attributes of their source, or sometimes simply what they look like. In most cases, any curio can stand on its own as a charm, but several items with similar abilities will work together for stronger results.

I’ve read that Mojo Bags shouldn’t be considered to be inanimate objects, but rather a spiritual ally. It's also been stated that mojo bags should be given a name, just as we all were when we were born. Do you feel this is important or not important to the potency of the bag?
Yes, the mojo is treated as a living thing; a beneficial spirit that should be nurtured and cared for. Some people like to share a name with their conjure hand. I might call my mojo for favor "Little Timothy" so there is a more direct connection between the bag and myself. To gain a stronger bond with the object of my affection, I would name a love bag after him or her. I leave this out of the instructions in my mojo packaging because there is limited space and I try to keep it as simple and user-friendly as possible for the new practitioner. I include more in-depth instructions with custom orders.
Naming your mojo isn't strictly necessary. Care and feeding, however, is. Oils, perfumes, and contrary to some people's sensibilities, urine or sexual fluids, are all ways to empower any Hoodoo charm, be it a bag, doll, petition paper, or spell.

You also do special orders! Will these often incorporate rare or more difficult to obtain items? What are some of the more in-depth mojo bags you’ve created?
They can, as there is more flexibility with price and the amount of time I have to make them. Another liberty I have is the use of animal curios. I avoid their use at Chicory Hill out of respect for their beliefs, but they are an important part of some Hoodoo work. Of course I discuss options with the customer beforehand.
I put together a "fiery protection" mojo, which reflects psychic and magical attacks back to the sender. Among other items, it contains a ling nut, also known as devil pod, which is difficult to find in the United States at a reasonable price. My favorite though, is what I call "The Winning Hand". It's for skill with the hands, either at work or while gambling, and I've only made one so far. It contains five hand-related curios, the rarest and most unique of which is a human finger bone, legally obtained of course.

10 Little Questions (because it’s the little things that mean so much)

What’s your favorite sound?
The crackle and roar of a fire.

What smell do you love?
The exceedingly mild aroma of the flower that blooms on our cactus once or twice a year. Its rarity makes it seem so much sweeter.

What animal would you like to have a conversation with?
A cat.

Would you ever agree to being secured to the Wheel of Death, while an expert knife thrower, threw knives at you?
Absolutely, without a second thought.

Where’s your happy place?
On the couch with a cat and a book.

What are you currently reading?
The Bartitsu Compendium: History and Canonical Syllabus

What’s your favorite herb?
Tobacco. It holds a sacred place in Native American beliefs, and I have always found a pipe to be meditative, in much the same way, I hope, as it is for them.

What’s your favorite essential oil?
Black Pepper.

What gemstone do you love?
Amber

What is the universe trying to tell us?
That things can be right again if we change our course now.

Interview with Practitioner Jessica Morgan Frombach

By Chelsea Morning

Jess tells us about Crystal Healing Massage, Sound Healing, and who she’d hang out with for the day

The Buddha says; when you like a flower, you just pluck it. But when you love a flower, you water it daily. Jess, daughter of the endless sea, sister of the wind through the trees, mother and protector to nature's beings, waters the world day after precious day. She is pure love, unconditional and universal. Her aura giggles, her understanding is made from the stuff of the stars, she's the woman we painted long ago on the walls of the caves. Whether connecting with nature on her own or with company, she always waters the creation with beauty and love.

Jess provides natural healing through Massage Therapy, Reiki Energy Healing, Sound Meditations, and workshops. Feel free to reach out to her with any questions or to book a session. But for now, light some incense, get cozy with your favorite herb, and be at one with the universe along with the lovely, free-spirited Jess.

You offer so many lovely, relaxing and therapeutic massages! Swedish, Deep Tissue, Pregnancy, Hot Stone, and Crystal Healing! Tell us about the Crystal Healing Massage and its benefits!Receiving a massage promotes natural healing, improves circulation, boosts the immune systems, reduces stress and tension held in the body, relieves aches and pains, and promotes deep relaxation. Using Rose Quartz Massage Stones as a compliment to the already wonderful benefits of massage assists you in opening up your Heart Space, connecting you to unconditional love and inner peace within. This service is incredibly nurturing and soothing to the mind, body, and spirit!

You’re such a free spirit and a daughter of the earth with a passion for nature and natural healing, how do you feel these values transfer and add to your approach of massage therapy? By living this passion and using my natural gifts in my practice. I am naturally empathetic and can feel when something is out of harmony or misaligned. I assist others to come back to their natural state and homeostasis. We all have the ability to heal ourselves, and I love to awaken natural healing in others through my practice. By giving someone a space to allow this healing to occur is incredibly rewarding and fuels my fire to create healing for the entire collective. I love to recommend natural healing techniques alongside physician’s care to create optimal healing, and share my experiences so others may learn how to heal themselves!

What is Sound Healing and how can it help attain balance and harmony within one’s self?Sound Healing uses vibration and resonance to create natural healing. Everything is made up of energy, everything vibrates. I use tuning forks, singing bowls, and other sound tools to produce frequencies that purify and cleanse the aura, your personal electromagnetic field. This process helps to raise your vibration and align with your higher self. It will assist you to deepen your brainwaves and enter into the parasympathetic nervous system “rest and digest” where natural healing occurs. Sound healing can bring up unresolved issues held within our unconscious and subconscious, bringing them to the surface and light so we consciously heal any outdated patterns no longer serving us and evolve to a higher state of being!

You experienced a life-changing event during a crystal singing bowl meditation. Would you share with us a little bit about that? Yes! I had very little experience with meditation or any type of energy work before this event. I was quite unsure at first how it would go as I never heard of such a thing before. We all laid down on yoga mats and got comfortable as the practitioner started to play the crystal singing bowls. I found it so fascinating how the sounds would enter into one ear and twirl around my brain brain before coming out the other ear. I focused on my breath, but in my head was still unsure if I was “doing it right”. I noticed myself observing my thoughts and feelings and allowing this experience. I got to a point where I fully relaxed and let myself go to this experience and that’s where the magic occured. I experienced complete euphoria and ecstasy within myself and was full of joy and connection afterwards. I fell in love with the experience and more incredible things started happening. The chi in my hands became opened and I could feel the balls of energy in my hands, I could feel everything around me though my hands like they were radios picking up on all the different frequencies and stations. I knew from that very moment, I had to use my natural healing powers by channeling energy through my hands. The third meditation I went to transformed me even more. I experienced being touched by God, the Universe, Source Energy, it looked exactly like the Creation of Adam by Michelangelo.. My hands rose as they now did when my chi opened and like a single touch of a finger from the Divine, I felt myself completed immersed in the unified field of the Universe. It was what I call my “full blown Spiritual Awakening” which has led me on my journey to being in Unity and Harmony.

Where can someone attend one of your Sound Healing Meditations?Currently, I am practicing at my Office located in Suite 3 at The Way to Healthy Living Center 4508 Zuck Rd, Erie, PA, 16506. I also hold group sound meditations and workshops inside the Yurt at the same location! Liking and following my business page will keep you informed on the next upcoming event!

You’re a lightworker, full of positivity and love, how does viewing the world from this perspective change the way you see yourself, others, and the planet? When we remember that we are all One, and each of us has our own personal individual journey, it makes it easier is accept, love, and forgive ourselves exactly as we are and co-exist peacefully with others. We can see everyone as a mirror of ourselves and see what’s being reflected back to us from our own inner World. I can let go of anger, hatred, disgust and other negativity towards myself and others and realize they are unhealed parts of myself that I can heal from and become a greater whole. When we love ourselves and shine light on our own darkness, we not only heal ourselves, but become a ripple effect of healing for the entire collective energy. By being aware and mindful of our own energy and choosing positivity and love, we spread that to others and have a greater outlook on life. Realizing that any darkness served a purpose and finding the lesson and blessings within each human experience. I see this planet as a wonderful place to explore ourselves on so many levels and create deeper understanding and compassion for all souls including the energy of this planet.

10 little questions (because the little things mean so much)

What smell do you love?Roses, flower essences

Interview with Chris Reinelt, Doula

Interview with Chris Reinelt, Doula by Chelsea Morning
Find out why Chris became a Doula, how she cares for the new mama, and what the universe is trying to tell us.

Women are a combination of pure strength and compassion. We are peaceful warriors; holding life in our core. Among our many talents, we birth new hope, new beginnings, a new addition to beauty and endurance of our kind. We’re the primal earth that ripens the seeds. Chris Reinelt, Doula with Erie Doulas, is the ultimate mother to the mother. With encouraging words of empowerment, she can invoke your inner Gaea. She supports with the gentle touch of hundreds of births in her hands, and will, through it all, be your emotional cheerleader. Like the best of mothers, she wholeheartedly believes in you, she roots for you, and guides you through, as you make your way to becoming Mother!

Why did you become a doula? Was it something you knew you always wanted to be, or did it find you, so to speak?
During my 4th and last pregnancy and birth, I was under the care of Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner Darlene Kerner. It was her care that exposed me to different options that lead to a beautiful, empowering birth and that ultimately put me on the path to becoming a Doula. I wanted other women to experience what I had experienced. I believe and have seen that when given support and knowing your options, you have better outcomes. That your involvement and participation in confident decision-making helps create a positive outcome and you're not just a bystander to the process or routine management.

How would you describe your style, your approach to birth, and your doula philosophy?
When attending a birth, I won’t know if I need to be “hands on” or “holding space” until witnessing where the mother is at in the process and how she can be supported best. Going with her rhythm and meeting her where she needs to be met. I involve her partner to their comfort level, reassure them both, and help them find what works best for them.
After years of practicing solo, I partnered up with another Doula, Michelle Totleben, whom I had trained with in 2000 and used as back up if needed. We are now known as Erie Doulas. https://www.eriedoulas.com/ . Between us, we have attended over 200 births and offer solid coverage at the time of birth. After an initial meeting and reviewing the contract, 1-2 prenatals are scheduled, which can take place at the woman’s home or place of choice. During those visits, topics include; history, health, birth location, early labor support, breastfeeding and generally anything that may be of concern to her/them.

What services are included during an expecting mama’s pregnancy and during labor?
Early support is offered at home until the midwife arrives, and after, as well, or until transitioned to the hospital of choice. We give continued support for several hours after birth or until feeding/breastfeeding is established. Massage, relaxation, positioning, partner support, and guidance, along with photography, if desired, and written documentation are some of the options used. In the event a surgical birth is needed, support is also available to the mom and her partner.

How do you care for the new mama and baby in the days after the birth?
Typically the day following the birth, I will visit the mom at her home or at the hospital. A week later, or sooner if needed, a home visit to go over notes, photos, and discuss anything needed, as well as to ensure that breastfeeding is going well. I will also encourage Mama to rest and reach out to many local resources for support if needed.

What have you learned about life, love, and strength from assisting and witnessing so many births?
I don’t know if I could even begin to relay what I’ve learned about life, love and strength. I continue to be in absolute awe at each and every birth. I’ve realized how amazing it is to be a witness to the sacredness of the whole process and what a privilege it is to be present at the birth of a child, to watch a woman become a mother, and to see a family be born.

10 little questions (because the little things mean so much)

What's your favorite sound? My favorite sound is centered around water; rain, waves, ripples, falls, (just not the sound of a sink dripping at 2 a.m.!) And anyone that knows me well, knows that I love the sound of a sport bike!

What smell do you love? I love the smell of warm, dry autumn leaves.

Would you rather shrink down super small or grow to the size of a giant, taller than the trees? The size of giant! I love to travel and I could cover so much more ground and see further!

Sunrise or sunsets? I love them both! Sunrises are energizing--the breaking of a new day with so many possibilities to explore, and with sunsets, I slow down and reflect. To sum it up: Sunrise= energizes= set goals. Sunset= slows me down= reflect. It’s nature’s way of balancing me.

What’s your favorite weird food combination that sounds gross but tastes really good? No weird food combos now, but growing up I loved my mom’s homemade mac and cheese with ketchup.

Is the hokey pokey what it's really all about? I guess if you looked at the hokey pokey as another way of just saying--get out there and participate in life--put yourself in or out there and do it--then it is what it's really all about.

What's your favorite herb? Rosemary

What essential oil do you love? Bergamot

What’s your favorite gemstone? Peridot--for me, it’s strength and confidence.

What is the universe trying to tell us? They universe is trying to tell us to slow down, pay attention and receive.

Sandy Schuschu, local DJ: Interview

Discover how local DJ Sandy Schuschu, became a DJ, why she loves spinning at senior centers, and what movie should be re-made into a musical.
--interview by Chelsea Morning

Every time we experience something life-quenchingly amazing, our brain gives us a dopamine reward. The sweet, neurotransmission rush cues the brain to get more of whatever it was that brought on that juicy goodness.  It’s a survival mechanism! For example; Food= Dopamine Reward= Survival! “Hugs and Kisses” = Dopamine Reward= Survival! And for many, like me; Music=Dopamine Reward=Survival!    Therefore, Sandy Schuschu= Dopamine Reward = Survival!

Local DJ, Sandy Schuschu is one cool chick! With a soul as deep down and groovin’ as Motown, she’s got blues in her bones, jazz for a brain, punk rock eyes, a gospel choir wailing in her heart and a sweet rocksteady smile that can get a whole dancehall feeling fine!
She sets up her vintage 70s turntable as though she’s rigging wires to an input/output plug hidden behind the cosmic veil, her cart of vinyl stacked next to her like ancient scrolls. She has a way of making any place so cozy and intimate, that you might believe you’re sitting on a rug in a dim lit apartment, while she’s playing records just for you. Still, as soon as the needle touches the grooves of the LP, and the first sounds of crackling fiery notes escape, smiles spread on faces as she delivers the Dopamine and helps us all survive another day.

What was your experience with music as a child? Can you remember the first song that you ever loved?
I was surrounded by music my entire life. My Grandfather and my mother both played instruments and we had a piano, growing up. My mother and my 4 older siblings had record collections. So of course, I was exposed to every kind of genre under the sun. To this day, I love everything from Broadway to Metal. I think the first song I remember playing over and over, was my mom's copy of Mashed Potato Time, by Dee Dee Sharp. I love that song. I still play it when I spin records.

People love music--I personally can’t live without it--but most people don’t run out, acquire turntables, and amps, and become a DJ! How and when did you decide that this is something you wanted to pursue?
A few years ago, I started crate digging…picking up records at various thrift stores, yard sales, etc. I was especially drawn to the old soul 45's. There is such a charm to hearing the driving beat and slight crackle of a good old soul record, when it's played on a turntable. One day, while browsing my news feed on Facebook, I saw a post by Matt Texter a local Musician/DJ. He was promoting vinyl night at Bobby's Place. He invited anyone with Soul, Hip Hop, Blues, Funk, etc. to bring their records down and give them a spin. I thought it sounded fun, so I did just that. Matt welcomed me and my little soul collection, showed me the ropes and I was instantly hooked. I loved learning the rhythm and timing of it and letting the records lead you on a journey. Watching the crowd forget life for a while and lose themselves in the music, was pure joy. And it came so naturally to me. He and I went on to co-DJ a string of vinyl dance nights at Scotty's. It wasn't until my friend Christine mentioned the need for female DJs in the area, that I actually thought…”Yes..., I need to do this”! Being a stay-at-home mom and out of the work force for six years, I had been cleaning houses as a side job. This was a chance to do something I love, still take care of my son...and empower myself by getting out there and doing my thing, just like the guys.

I LOVE that you LOVE to DJ at senior centers, tell us the meaning and importance of doing this?
As folks grow older, their lives change in ways that can only be understood through that very experience. The world advances at a fast pace. It can leave many senior folks feeling out of step. Things feel unfamiliar…like technology, cultural changes, social trends, fashion, etc. and simply how they are perceived and treated in society. Playing the music they request is something that helps them connect with themselves in such a pure way. It lets them experience feelings and memories that are not only familiar…but have meaning to them. I feel that allows people to feel at home in a special way.

Music has been known not only to bring patients in nursing homes out of their isolation and help revive memory, but it also helps people experiencing anxiety and depression, military and refugee PTSD, as well as people enduring physical pain. Why do you think the harmony and magic of music is so healing?
Whether it is joy, pain, hope, inspiration, longing, fear, humor, regret or love…Music taps into the deepest part of our souls and allows us to experience these thoughts and feelings in a very natural, organic way. It can help us move through thoughts and emotions, that sometimes awaken, after many years… without speaking a word.

Music is an ingrained part of every culture, tribe, and society. Though humans like to take credit for almost everything, music began in nature; the babbling brook, the songs of birds, whales, crickets, the crackle of fire. Would you say that music is also our contribution to the spiritual conversation of the universe?
Absolutely…it transcends all of the things that tend to separate us…sex, race, religion, culture, politics, and AGE!

15 Little Questions (because the little things mean so much)

What’s your favorite noise? A nice thunderstorm.
What smell do you love? Campfire.

What’s your plan to survive the apocalypse? Offering my cleaning services in exchange for room and board in someone’s underground bunker.

Dylanna Jackon Grasinger of the International Institute of Erie: Interview

by Chelsea Morning

There is nothing sweeter in this difficult world than finding your place, coming home, and sharing your life with loving family and true friends.

Most of us have our humble homes, our little nests filled with our favorite things, a place to tuck our children safely in with love and lullabies , to dance, to sing, and to dream, a moveable feast of life, that infuses into the walls, the floorboards, the very foundation.
As the holiday season embraces us and we fill our warm dens with our tribe of family and dear friends, when the smell of spice steeps our kitchen like tea, and little trinkets are joyfully gifted and lovingly received. Let us also think of our neighbors and those in need.

For refugees and immigrant families, whose lives have been uprooted from their communities, finding no other choice but to flee from war, injustice, and violence, leaving behind their homes, their favorite things, their own spice-scented kitchens and memory-infused walls to seek refuge, shelter and new beginnings, starting over in a new place can be difficult and frightening.

We, as individuals and as a community can be the change we wish to see. We can help our new neighbors find their place and finally feel safe, welcome and at home. I asked Dylanna Jackson Grasinger, the earnest, compassionate, and amazing director of the International Institute of Erie, what we can do to help.
What is the mission of the International Institute of Erie? What services do you provide?
Our mission: We are part of a nationwide network that assists the world’s most vulnerable people overcome social, cultural and economic barriers so that they can flourish and help local communities grow.
We provide a variety of services to assist the newest members of the Erie community. Our Reception and Placement Program (R&P) is the welcoming committee. R&P workers meet new arrivals at the airport, get them into their homes, provide cultural orientation and show them how to navigate through the city and through all the various systems they will use towards establishing their own success. Our Matching Grant Program (MG) works with our arrivals who are able to work and provides classes and support towards finding sustainable employment. We have an interpretation program to help improve communication between our new arrivals and providers. We also have a diverse portfolio of ongoing classes that assist with learning English, family support, women’s groups as well as childcare and after school programming.

Each of the individuals and families you serve are all seeking safety, freedom, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives and their futures. Many have had to flee their homes, leaving much behind, and arriving here with very little. Donations, of course, is one way the Erie community can help our new neighbors feel welcome. What are some of the more helpful donations that are needed, and where can donations be brought to?
The Erie community has always been a very giving community. Donations help us to fulfill our mission. Our families arrive with little more than their clothing, and the weather they are coming from is not the same as the weather we enjoy here in Erie. Donations of winter coats, boots, gloves and hats are always welcomed. Backpacks, school uniforms and other school supplies are extremely
useful in preparing our students for school. Household goods ranging from silverware through pots and pans in good condition are helpful in getting our households set up. Gift cards to Walmart or cash donations always seem to help us get needed supplies and household goods. Furniture donations are on an as-needed basis. All of these donations can be brought to the International Institute at 517 E. 26th Street, Erie, Pa from 8am until 4pm, Monday through Friday. If you have any questions call (814) 452-3935 ext 2021 or email jbrooks@uscri-erie.org.

Other than donations, are there other ways the Erie community can be supportive? Are there opportunities for local employers or landlords to become involved? Are there occasions where people can volunteer?
Erie has long been a very welcoming community for people wanting to build a better life and continues that tradition and support. We work with a variety of landlords and employers who see the benefits of having refugees as tenants and employees. We have amazing volunteer opportunities ranging from assisting in-home set up, organization of donations, assistance with office work, etc. If someone is interested in getting involved as an employer, landlord or volunteer call (814) 452-3935.

The families and individuals arriving here are coming from many different countries, with lifestyles and culture that may have few similarities to America. What have you noticed that they like most about living in Erie, and what do you feel our community can do to help them feel more at home?
The amazing thing about refugees that arrive here in Erie is not the differences, but the similarities. People come here looking for a safe place to live, the ability to earn a living, and the opportunity for their children to achieve their dreams. Our clients love that Erie provides them those opportunities. Community members should treat them like they would treat their other neighbors. Speak to them when they have the opportunity. Make sure they feel welcomed. Ask them questions and provide them with information and help if the opportunity arises.

After having worked with so many uprooted families, assisting them in reclaiming their lives, learning their culture, hearing their stories, witnessing their struggles, watching them achieve their dreams; what does the word ‘Home’ now mean to you?
I have been fortunate enough to meet and know people from around the world and be a part of their success. They are defined by their love of their family, desire to build the best life possible and acceptance of things that cannot be changed. I try to build my home around those same concepts.

An Interview with Sarah Peach

by Chelsea Morning
Find out why magic is so important, how she started doing "Imagination Shoots" and what "Friend" she's most like!
Half gypsy, half mermaid, Sarah Peach is a mythical force of stunning beauty, amazing strength, magical creativity and above all else, love.
She's a free-spirited, whimsical soul; wild at heart, child at heart, a coven of proud ancestors in tow. Vast and brilliant, there's no lie in her smile, the word impossible won't cross her lips, she'll create another world on a whim, and be back in time to make dinner. Her eyes can see beyond the ordinary, able to capture the colors of our world, our inner beauty, our outer glow. She reminds us that we truly are magic and made from the stars.
I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder and enchantment interviewing local portrait photographer, Sarah Peach.
When did you first become interested in photography?
My first specific memory of falling in love with photography was when I went to NYC with my school's marching band when I was 14. This was during film days, and my camera I brought with me popped open and my whole roll of film was exposed... and the back wouldn't shut. I was pretty devastated I lost all those photos. I had to buy a disposable camera and just deal with it. My sister, knowing how upset I was, and a few close friends helped me recreate those photos by back-tracking our whole day. But even looking through the lens of a cheaply made (super overpriced) disposable camera, I couldn't help but notice how much I loved it. Even though I lost all those other photos, I created new ones with the people I loved. And my love for photography grew from there.

Your photos are full of beauty, creativity, spirit and a lot seem to come straight from another era or even of another realm. I love how you're not the traditional portrait photographer! How do you feel your "nontraditional" perspective helps you in capturing the perfect shot in your couples/marriage portraits, family, maternity and senior year portraits?
I always hope, even on a traditional shoot, that I can somehow capture magic. I feel like everyone has a little magic in them and I try to bring that out. I think my nontraditional approach to shoots really helps me think outside the box, whether I'm doing an Imagination Shoot or a wedding.
You specialize in what you call Imagination Shoots, where clientele can be portrayed as whimsical mermaids, mythical woodland sprites inspired by the natural world, legendary unicorns, enchanting witches, royal maidens, all within stunning magical settings transported from faerie dimensions and fairy tales. It's truly an otherworldly concept. How did it become your specialty?
Part of it is because ever since I was little, I've loved magic and fairytales. And, thankfully, I never outgrew that. The rest of it came when I had my daughter. She became the most magical thing in my world, and my love for everything magic became her love, too, and she became my muse. I would photograph her, and she would ask for things that no one else would, like "can you add a rainbow in the sky?", or when she lost her two front teeth, "make me a vampire" or "make me have wings!!". And I would never know if I could do it, but I'd spend hours trying. And I'd always come up with something fun, even if it wasn't perfect. It was like modern day dress-up with my daughter and being able to bring her imagination to life was magical. It became something I wanted to do everyday and I knew I had to incorporate it into my business.
From mermaid tails to antler headdresses to Harry Potter, the costumes of your Imagination Shoots are fantastically amazing! Do you have a huge wardrobe of beautiful attire to choose from or are all ensembles customized?
Sometimes clients provide their own wardrobe and accessories, but I also get a lot of my stuff from thrift stores or my own closet. I am also lucky enough to be friends with the owner of Pointe Foure, a local vintage clothing store. She is sweet enough to lend or rent out clothing for me quite a bit. The mermaid tails I own are specially made by a company in Colorado called Swimtails, and I'm hoping to get some more very soon. I also love to create, and I make a lot of the headpieces you see in my shoots.
I feel like if I called you up to schedule a photo shoot as a mystical gypsy fortune teller, complete with a crystal ball and caravan, you'd say, "Not a problem!". How important do you feel it is in today's world to connect with our magical side and to let our inner spirit essence shine?
My family actually comes from gypsies! My grandma still has my great-great grandmother's crystal ball. I think connecting to your magical side and inner spirit is so so so important, especially in today's world when people forget to just take in all the beauty and magic around us. And a lot of that comes from our own history and family. I love the quote, "We are the granddaughters of the witches you could not burn." Because not only is it important for us to connect to our magical side, it's so important to pass that down. I brought my daughter up having a strong spirituality and love for our church and God, and I also brought her up with a broad imagination and a love for nature, magic, reading, singing and creating. Keep the magic and beauty alive through the next generation!
You're a family oriented person, it's so sweet how you literally shout with joy your adoration for you daughter and your husband! What do you think you've learned from photographing all different kinds of people and the celebration of all the different kinds of love?

I love love! I know it's cheesy but it's my favorite thing. I think that's why I love photographing weddings and seeing smiles and capturing joy on a mother's face when she looks at her new baby. I think what I've learned photographing different people and different kinds of love, is that love looks different to everyone, but as long as it's real, it's the most beautiful thing in the universe.
10 Little Questions (because it's the little things that mean so much!)
What's your favorite sound?
My daughter's voice
What smell do you love?
There are shops in the Morocco section of Epcot I always have to walk through when I visit, because they are so beautiful and I absolutely love the way they smell. It smells like the perfect blend of different herbs, spices and incense all mixed together. Every time I smell something even remotely similar, my brain takes me back to a specific shop there with a thatched roof, as the sun is peeking through the ceiling and all the different colors of fabric are flowing in the wind.
What mythical creature are you?
Definitely a mermaid!
Rotary dial phones or cell phones?
I like to look at and take photos of rotary phones, but for functional purposes and photo storage, cell phones.
What "Friend" are you most like; Rachel, Ross, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler or Joey?
100% Phoebe, I actually get compared to her quite often.
You're a witch, what's your signature spell?
I'm going to dive into the Harry Potter world real quick and say, "Lumos" since I'm afraid of the dark.
What's your favorite herb?
Basil
What's your favorite essential oil?
Eucalyptus!
What gemstone do you love?
Hematite or Unakite, I can never decide between those two.
What is the universe trying to tell us?
I don't think the universe tells us anything as a group, I think it tells us all different things, you just have to listen or look for your own message. My messages aren't specific words or anything. More like images (ironically) or sounds and feelings. Just the beauty of the world around us. Watching the sunset. Taking a walk in the woods and listening to the birds. Petting my cats. Listening to my daughter sing. My husband's laugh. They aren't exactly messages, more like the things that are the most beautiful- maybe appreciation and thankfulness are my messages.
